Supermoon, Rising
June 26, 2013
The couple of nights surrounding this were supposed to be the closest the moon would be to Earth in a while, and thus the largest in the sky. Hence the popularly given name of "Supermoon." I think the very best night of it was the night before I took these shots, and these were already past the time when the moon was at its lowest point of the night I took them. And it was moving fast... it rose a significant distance in the half-hour or so it took me to experiment with settings and work out the shots I wanted.
Shot handheld, all the way in on my 75-300mm. A real challenge to get a steady shot at that level of zoom and pretty slow shutter speeds. But a tripod would have been frustrating far past acceptable levels for restricting mobility in composition. Sometimes it's a trade-off. And I'm actually really happy with the shots I came out with!
