Ring of Fire
Date: 09/12/2010
This was actually an exposure test, my first shot of the evening, to see how some tripod-based long exposure shots of some of the lit playa art would look. When I took this shot, I wasn't even aware of the acrobat in her balance pose inside the fire ring, but it turned out that my "test" was successful, and there was my shot of this piece of art!
Photographer in the Shadows
Date: 09/12/2010
Most of the playa's art cars surrounded the Lady sculpture (at left) for a party on Thursday night where the model on whom the sculpture was based made an appearance to sing and dance.
I shot quite a few photos of the Lady herself, and some of the art cars, closer up. I don't particularly remember taking this shot, but it came out pretty cool, and that's my own shadow in the foreground.

Art Car Wash orange/blue
Date: 09/12/2010
"Distortion Art Car Wash" has been an installation for at least the past two years that I specifically remember seeing it. Possibly a lot longer.
The lights are constantly scrolling in different "signboard" patterns across the front, and the overall colors morph through a series of changes, too.
Exposure here is about 8 seconds.

Biohazard I
Date: 09/14/2010
I hadn't even come across this small installation until the night I was out with my camera and tripod to shoot the lights. While I was shooting these, a couple of guys came by and asked me about exposures and camera equipment, We chatted for a while, and I showed them how the photos were coming out. Just a bit of random person to person interaction, a moment shared on the playa.
This is shot in full dark of night, with a 20-second exposure. The lights illuminating the bio-suited man were actually flashing around inside him. I love the different lights and motion visible in the cityline behind the sculpture in each shot. It's what makes each of the three frames completely different despite being "almost the same" photo.

"I Dream of Love" - 2010 Temple I
Date: 09/14/2010
The Temple of Flux.
I didn't admire this year's Temple on a purely visual level as much as I have in past years, although it was prettier lit up like this at night than viewed in daylight. However the Temple always fulfills its constant purpose no matter its changing appearance from year to year.
The Temple, like the Lady, is another subject that I didn't get to photograph by night as much as I would have liked to. There were some other angles where the red and yellow lights shone from within and behind the curves of the structure in really interesting ways. But I had started with this angle because I loved being able to see the Man off in the distance (at right). I had already done a lot of long-exposure shooting that night, and my camera batteries gave out after just a few shots from this angle. I never got back out to try shooting the structure from its other faces, but I do like these images that I came away with.
In this frame, the blue streak is from a bicyclist who slowly pedaled across the playa between Temple and camera during the time of the exposure.
I think these were shot at between 10-15 second exposures.

Peacock Art Car I
Date: 09/12/2010
It seemed like the tail of this car ought to light up too - I mean, it's a peacock! I would think the tail would be the most brilliant feature! But in the several times I saw this car on the playa, I never saw the tail lit.

Folded Flamingo Montage
Date: 10/05/2010
This flamingo art car was my favorite of all of them I saw on the playa this year.
I saw it from afar one evening, loved that it was a flamingo, and hoped I would see it again sometime when I was out with my camera. I did, and took tons of photos of it.
At that point I didn't even realize that its "folded" form was not its only configuration. Later on I saw it not only "unfold," with the neck becoming a giant crane extension - but the bird also "breathed fire" from its head and beak!
Photos of all of those configurations are in this album, since, being my favorite, I took WAAAAAY many photos of this amazing creation.
