Playa Trees
Date: 10/13/2010
Art installation of wooden trees, in the dusty afternoon haze.
Playa Dust Devil
Date: 10/13/2010
Wide panorama of the open Playa, with the Man structure and a good-sized dust devil visible.
Tux Man

Now THIS is the right attitude toward formal dress on the Playa. This dude just looked too cool, and I asked if I could take his photo.
Emerald City Line
Date: 10/13/2010
This camp was at the "corner" of our street. Their structures were covered in this beautiful shiny green, always an eye-catcher for me, since it's my favorite color.
I never went inside to see what they were doing, but whatever their camp activities were, they attracted quite a line of people waiting.

Safety: Fair Warnings

A sign outside one group's camp I passed by on one of my "random City exploration" walks.
Really, what more can you say. We love our fire!
Liquored Lantern
Date: 10/13/2010
I do believe the sign means their bar is CLOSED at the moment.
Platform Man
Date: 10/13/2010
Large steel man sculpture by the same art group that brought this metal ladysculpture to the playa in 2009, and several others in the series in past years.
I love sun flares, and shot for it on purpose here.

Fashion Mannequins I
Date: 10/13/2010
This installation had a series of fashionably dressed mannequins with sensors for faces. There were some small control stations around the edges, but I never really figured out what they did. I saw this installation in the daytime, so it may have been a night effect that I missed.

Many Santa Clauses
Date: 10/13/2010
A perfect example of "zany activity ala Burning Man." This procession seemed to be a gathering of Santa Clauses. They walked, biked, and rode (on the art car) down the road in front of our camp one afternoon.
Unicorn Art Car
Date: 10/13/2010
I never saw this car by night to see how it was lit, but it was big and bright in the daytime.
Dragon Art Car
Date: 11/20/2010
The owners/drivers of this awesome art car were kind enough to let me take a bunch of shots of them and their creation while they were parked by the Bliss Dance (lady sculpture) the afternoon I was out photographing her.

Playa Angel - Borrowed Wings
Date: 11/20/2010
As I wandered deep Playa, I came upon this beautiful small installation resembling a stylized angel. The frame is metal, the head is a crystal globe, and the wings are a patchwork of quilted fabric pieces that blow in the wind, accented with hanging metal charms.
When I first approached the sculpture, this group of people were taking turns posing in front of it, "borrowing" its wings.

Here's a closer shot showing some of the detail in the fabric, and taking advantage of the perspective by shooting along the sweep of the wing.

I didn't see any title or description around the sculpture, so having no idea of the artist's conception, I could only enjoy it for its immediate beauty.

A closeup of the beautiful striated globe of the angel's "head." The head and body struts make for a really nice structural abstract here, too.

This lovely structure had wind harps and a pipe organ integrated into the installation. Sadly, I was never nearby at night when the musical performances too place.
While I was taking photos here, a woman who turned out to be the designer of the installation struck up conversation with me. I wish I could remember her name... I wasn't carrying anything to write it down with at the time. She also told me her web site, and I was positive I remembered it, but when I went to that site, it was some company that had no relation to Burning Man or art. So I guess I remembered it incorrectly after all.
I really enjoyed this structure for its layers of lattice that cast dappled shadows onto the ground and everyone who walks through.

This couple had shared a kiss just a few moments before I snapped this shot.

I had hoped to come back to this area with an art model or two, to take advantage of the wonderful shadow casting. I didn't get the opportunity to do that, but a couple of passers-by saw me taking photos and we got to talking. I described the potentials for the shadow effects, and they posed for just a couple of shots.
None of us was carrying anything to write down contact information with, and I invited them to stop by camp and get my info, but I don't think they made it by. I'm sorry not to be able to share the photos with them.
