Nurturing the Flames
Date/Time: Wed 29 Aug 2007 05:17:12 PM PDT
This photo is from the candle lighting we did at Gremlin's memorial at the studio, August 20, 2007.
The breeze was just enough to blow out some of the candles before we could get them all lit.
One person (I actually don't remember who) suggested that if each person sheltered one of the groups of candles,
we could keep them all lit.
Everyone jumped right in and sat near one candle or group of candles, cupping their hands and body over the flame.
We got all the candles lit, and then the breeze died down and the candles stayed lit. Every so often one would still
blow out and we would relight it.
We kept the candles lit for hours, sitting outside and talking and sharing.
The way the group worked together spontaneously to keep the flames alive was so perfect for a tribute to Gremlin.
He believed that people work together for a shared purpose. And lighting those candles was a shared purpose we all
believed in. One person had the idea, everyone jumped in to do their part, and together, a goal was accomplished.
We all shared the satisfaction and unity of that teamwork, and the feeling that we had created something in the spirit
of our friend.

Candle Dragon
Date: 08/29/2007
From the candle lighting at Gremlin's memorial at the studio, August 20, 2007.
One of the candles my mom put out to light was a blue taper that had been lying around the studio with a group of candles
for as long as I can remember.
When the candles had been burning for a long time, and we were looking at the pretty patterns in the wax, my mom picked
up the wax melt from the blue candle and said, "Look. What do you see?"
It was this perfect blue dragon. Dragons, of course, are one of Gremlin's totem creatures. And blue was one of his favorite
colors. It fit perfectly.
For those of us who like to see it this way, it seemed like he was telling us he was with us, shaping the love we sent up with
the candle flames into a little piece of himself for us to see and hold onto.
Ashes

This is Gremlin's urn with his ashes. You can't tell in the photo, but it's kind of blue filigree over silver. With white birds.
You can see part of one of the birds right where the urn disappears into the cask.
We put flowers and a couple of mementos into the cask before it was sealed. I didn't know we would be doing this.
I had the amethyst crystal I'd been wearing for a couple months, and the lens cap to the lens he gave me with my
camera on my birthday in '06. I put both those things in there with him, for what those things are worth, more to the
living than the dead, I think.
A Handful of Soil

Funeral, Oak Hill Memorial Park, August 17, 2007.
Of all the parts of the funeral, the one thing I didn't want to do was put a handful of dirt into the grave.
I just didn't want to.
My mom did, and I was glad she did. I was glad to have her at the funeral, and glad she got to pay her respects.
Marker Stone

Funeral, Oak Hill Memorial Park, August 17, 2007.
There will be a bench, and a much larger engraved stone, but it takes a few months for those to be ready.
For now there is just this small stone.
The larger marker will have his signature as D. M. Gremlin, along with his legal name.

Twizzlers
Date: 08/29/2007
This photo was taken by our good friend Mudd, who was able to visit Gremlin's grave site in San Jose the week after his funeral.
He knew Gremlin loved candy, and always used to bring us licorice when he would come in for sessions.
So Mudd brought Gremlin some Twizzlers, to continue the tradition.
